Clean and Preserve Your Jewelry

Girl with a Pearl Earring

As for shine and luster – it goes the same for pearl as for silver: the more you wear the better. The pearls absorb your skin’s natural oils, and they get nice and shiny. Our style advice: wear pearls to brighten up your complexion and give an extra glow for your face without strobing.

If you’re going out, you should finish your makeup and hairdo before put on pearls, as these cosmetics can discolor pearls. You can clean slightly tainted pearls with a soft, clean cloth (preferably made from cotton or bamboo), barely dampened with water. We recommend for every fifth cleaning to use a mild solution of water and Castille soap (made with natural oils such as olive and coconut). Air-dry the pearls overnight.

So Shiny – Diamonds

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but they still need some love and attention. A cleaning solution can be created to bring the sparkle back in the hard stone.

A diamond should be soaked for 20 minutes in a solution of one cup warm water and ΒΌ cup ammonia. Gently scrub it with a soft-bristle toothbrush. This helps get into the small areas between the diamond and the setting.

Rinse with warm water, and lay on a tissue to dry. If diamonds are set in platinum, this method will also bring shine back to the setting. Avoid contact with chlorinated pools or household cleaning products containing chlorine bleach because they might discolor the mounting.

The NO-NO – Cleaning Gold at Home

If you do have special concerns about your jewelry, or if you would simply be more comfortable letting a professional do the job, then the good news is that this option is very widely available. Many jewelry shops will offer this service, and even if they do not, they can typically point you in the direction of a reputable cleaner.

If you do take your jewelry in to be cleaned, make sure that you get comprehensive information about what will be done to it. Remember though that the exchange of information is a two-way street. That means that it is also very important for you to make the cleaner aware of any relevant history that the gold jewelry piece may have. For example if a gemstone is loose or has needed to be reset in the past, this is definitely something that the cleaner should be made aware of so that he or she can take extra care to avoid problems.
